Description

Pietro Mennea at the 1980 Olympic Games, in Moscow, won one of the most important races of his career or the Olympic gold in the final of the 200 meters, with a time of 20 seconds and 19 hundredths. Mennea's race was particularly exciting for the prodigious comeback, in the last 100 meters, on his rivals and in particular on the British Allan Wells, who seemed to dominate the race. The recovery of Mennea, in sixth position in the middle of the race, seemed impossible, then the incredible happened: immediately after the curve, the “Azzurro” began to accelerate with an astounding progression, then comeback the opponents one by one and finally beat Wells by 2 cents. A legendary triumph for the “Freccia del Sud”! Paolo Rosi's commentary on the final straight was also memorable: "Mennea tries to recover, try to recover, recover, recover, recover, recover, recover, won! He won! Mennea's extraordinary feat!". An indelible memory.
