The inner struggle
Description
The inner struggle is a profound and emotional experience vividly portrayed in this painting. The black grid structure conveys a sense of limitation, symbolizing inner blockages, fears, or self-imposed restrictions. These structures dominate the background, reminiscent of negative thoughts deeply embedded in the subconscious. The struggle seems to unfold between old beliefs or constraints and the desire for liberation.
The flowing yellow streaks contrast with this and may represent two opposing forces: hope and healing on one hand, rage and despair on the other. The yellow could be interpreted as light or energy attempting to break through the darkness – a symbol of the will to free oneself from a burdensome situation. At the same time, its shape resembles fire or droplets, as if something is melting or burning out, indicating the intensity of the internal battle.
The red accents appear deliberately placed and might symbolize deep-seated emotions such as pain, passion, or unfulfilled desires. Perhaps they represent wounds from the past that still influence the present struggle and affect emotional balance.
The entire composition does not appear structured but rather chaotic and dynamic. This dynamism reflects how an inner struggle often feels – at times, control seems possible, yet emotions then flow in all directions uncontrollably. The various elements in the painting seem to battle against one another, much like inner voices or conflicting thoughts. Both rigid and fluid forms are visible, suggesting that the struggle occurs between entrenched patterns and the longing for change.
Ultimately, the painting expresses an intense emotional conflict. It illustrates the tension between darkness and light, limitation and movement, pain and transformation. Yet, where fire burns and structures melt, space for new beginnings emerges – a sign of hope and the potential for change.

Critical note on the artwork “The Inner Struggle” by Nelli Wilhelm
"The Inner Struggle" is a hymn to the inner strength inherent in man.
Black lines intersect each other, creating a cage of color, a prison.
However, spots of red and yellow color burst in forcefully. They represent the struggle, the will to dominate over oppression. And this is how light, serenity emerges.
We are faced with a highly suggestive artwork, as well as intensely emotional.
