This fontain is  located on Main Shopping Street in Edirne

The Mermaid Fountain is located on the pedestrian street Saraçlar Street in the Zindanaltı area in the city center. It is not an Ottoman historical monument but a modern decorative fountain, installed in the early 21st century as part of an urban renewal project.

After Saraçlar Street was transformed into a pedestrian zone around 2008, the municipality of Edirne launched a project to modernize the city center and create a more attractive environment for residents and visitors. As part of this project, around 2009, the fountain with a mermaid sculpture was installed. It quickly became a recognizable symbol of the street and a popular meeting point.

The location was chosen because it lies at a key point along the pedestrian axis—a small square where the flow of people from shops, cafés, and bars converges. The surrounding area is known as Zindanaltı (“under the dungeon”), a name that comes from an Ottoman underground prison that once existed nearby.

Over the years, the fountain became an iconic landmark of Edirne’s central shopping district. During later renovations of the street, parts of the sculptural composition were removed or altered, which sparked public debate among local residents, many of whom had come to see it as an important element of the city center’s identity.
