“A man paints with his brains not with his hands” Michelangelo said. Painters offer us their works not only as a product of art but as a product of their mind, the synthesis or explosion of emotions and passions. For this reason the critical review of an author becomes meticulous and fascinating as in the case of this solo exhibition “Soul crossing life” where Assunta Cassa takes us on a journey towards achieving awareness while highlighting her internal passions.
The dominating theme is tango. As tango is the continuous research for harmony, tango is souls crossing each other through bodies, in an intense research, building a dialogue through an embrace; in the same way these artworks remind us of time passing by, the rhythm of a life lived with passion searching balance and harmony. Assunta represents tango as a metaphor of life! A metaphor that we find also in her other artworks. Through a pictorial and graphic rhythm that is almost musical, these artworks represent journeys, departures, escapes, loneliness, a soul ready to take off. Assunta's soul is therefore freed from the dance, in its journey through life.
The technique, oil painting with spatula, shows ability and talent, as well as gives the artworks body and substance as in suggesting that instinct and passion come before thinking in an act of liberation. The chromatic choice reinforces this message of vital dialogue between the conscious and unconscious, gives energy to the painting, capturing attention with strength. This energy becomes overwhelming, although Assunta has chosen to fragment or frame the colour, representing the picture in big digital pixels, as in saying: this is my virtual journey!
The same proud, solemn, passionate, happy, crazy, nostalgic soul can be found in the many abstract paintings that through their colour, free from graphic compositions, transmit the same musical and chromatic rhythm that is seen in figurative paintings.
