Biography

Besides working as an employee and being now retired, it’s clear my interest in visual arts, especially painting and graphics, passions I’ve always cultivated and that I can now practice with more punctuality.

I had a troubled childhood, mostly because of my precarious health due to polio, a disease that shows its consequences even nowadays. This difficulty in movement has motivated me to draw, exploiting every occasion. After high school, I’ve always cultivated the pleasure of drawing, but also of oil painting, trying sculture and furniture design.

I paint with oil on canvas or table, but also on other non conventional mediums.

During my first works (80s), I experimented with traditional classic figurative painting. Gradually, I’ve tried to find a more personal expression, finding inspiration in symbolic, mystic-metaphysic and even abstract concepts.

Lately, I’m getting back simplicity and variety of everyday human expressions and situations. Usually my paintings are the result of improvisation, which means that I paint without a preparatory study, not for the figure, nor the color, trying to focus the inspiring idea while I paint.

While previously I’ve been frugal with the use of the color, also due to economical reasons, today I am attracted by successive stratification and the use of glazing and brushstroke.

Vice versa, in graphic works I’ve passed from an accurate and meticulous study of the subject and an almost maniacal implementation of the first works where I’ve even used the technique pointillism, to the research of essentiality and simplicity of the line or the stain, of the immediate expressiveness and of its visual efficiency. I’m used to mix different techniques and to try unusual colorants, such as coffee grounds or mint essence.

I haven’t always put a sign or a date on my works - during the time I spent in Genoa I often used the pseudonym of Rawda or Rawda-Lucia Atzeni.

Until now, due to a kind of shyness, I haven’t done a lot to let others know my works. Nevertheless, I’ve participated in some exhibitions and I’ve even had some recognition. Now that due to my age I’m getting slower, I want to propose myself only online, at least for now.

Painting and graphics are two different techniques often competitors between them, but in me neither of them prevails over the other. In fact, they gladly coexist.
