Biography
CV

Sonia J. borns in Tomar, lived 30 years in Lisbon and recently moved to the interior of Portugal, Serra da Estrela, the highest point of the Continent, where calmess and back to nature were fundamental to the new artistic path.  Aged 54 years old, 1971, studied Economics and brings a 30-year professional background in management and technology, including entrepreneurship and C-level responsibilities in high-stakes corporate systems. This experience informs the work structurally: decision-making under pressure, accountability, and long-term performance shape a disciplined approach to restraint, continuity, and clarity. Painting developed as a measured recalibration rather than a narrative break, allowing the practice to operate through duration and sustained presence. Female strength is understood as a condition—responsibility, containment, endurance—rather than a theme. This context does not explain the work. It clarifies the conditions under which its autonomy is maintained.

Sonia J. is a Portugal-based abstract painter whose practice investigates material presence, accumulation, and endurance through textured, multi-layered surfaces. Working primarily with acrylic, gesso, and sand, she builds dense tactile fields where time is experienced as a physical dimension—embedded in strata, abrasion, and controlled chromatic restraint. Her paintings avoid overt narrative or spectacle; instead, they emphasize material intelligence, disciplined palette decisions, and the meditative force of surface, positioning the work at the intersection of contemporary abstraction and embodied perception. With academic training in Economics and more than 30 years of executive and analytical leadership experience in the technology sector, Sonia brings structural rigor and high-level strategic thinking to her art practice. In 2024, following a severe burnout alongside long-term caregiving responsibilities for a son with an intellectual disability, painting became central to her recovery and emotional regulation. Abstract painting—especially through texture, acrylic layering, and embodied gesture—emerged as a non-verbal language capable of holding intensity, care, and transformation. This personal pivot matured into a professional artistic career grounded in a solid and expanding portfolio, international visibility, and external validation.

Sonia’s work has received notable recognition in the European contemporary art landscape. She was selected as one of the Top 10 Berlin Contemporary Artists (2024–2025) and holds an official AKOUN valuation of €1200 minimum per piece for the 100C format (100x100cm). Her trajectory is further supported by international awards attention, including nomination for the Premio Internazionale Artista d’Europa 2025, by Pitturiamo, presented in Venice on December 5, 2025. Her artistic positioning is increasingly aligned with the intersection of culture, wellbeing, and social impact—treating art as a form of care and as a tool for mental health, inclusion, and embodied expression.

Exhibitions and art fairs across Europe have accelerated the visibility of her practice. In 2025, Sonia exhibited at the 5th International Contemporary Art Fair with IT’S LIQUID Group in Barcelona (July 18–28, 2025) and participated in the Braga Contemporary Art Exhibition in Braga, Portugal (September 12–14, 2025). She also exhibited with IT’S LIQUID Group at SensesART in Lecce, Italy (December 2025) and received Artist of the Month (September 2025) recognition, alongside an interview with curator Luca Curci focusing on her process and transformation. Additional Italian showcases include Galleria Art Spazio Tempo (Pitturiamo) , Venice (December 6–16, 2025), Galleria Cael, Milan (December 5–19, 2025), and an institutional exhibition at MUST Museum, Southern Italy (December 19, 2025 – January 4, 2026).

Sonia’s practice is also strengthened through curatorial dialogue and professional critique. She has completed portfolio reviews with Charlotte Paritzky (Z&B Gallery / OBRA Art), Quentin Métayer (PR & Communication, Perrotin), and Flavio Scaloni (Galerie Lo Scalo). Her work is available internationally through platforms including Singulart, Artling and Artmajeur, and she has completed commissions for hotel and spa environments in Italy, integrating abstract painting into wellbeing-oriented spaces.
