Demeter or Demetra ‘mother goddess’ is the Greek goddess of agriculture, pure nourisher of the green and young earth, life-giving cycle of life and death, and protector of marriage and sacred law. The Homeric hymn to Demeter has been dated to around the 7th century BC. Together with her daughter Persephone, they were the central characters of the Eleusinian mysteries that also preceded the Olympian pantheon.

In Roman mythology, Demeter was associated with Ceres.
