Khorakhané (a forza di essere vento)

Description

My work is born from the deep connection I feel with Fabrizio De André’s Khorakhané, a song that profoundly moves me for the way it captures the dignity and suffering of the Romani people, victims of injustice and a history too often forgotten. Through this song, De André calls out the marginalization and oblivion they face—themes I wanted to bring to life in my painting, translating his words into images that convey both the dignity and tragedy of this people.

In my painting, each character represents a part of myself, my story, and the values I hold dear. It is an act of remembrance and testimony, a tribute to De André’s message, which speaks of freedom, humanity, and the right to exist beyond prejudice. This work is also a fusion of times and memories for me: I started it in 2013, during a time of great inspiration, but with Gaia’s birth and new family and work commitments, it remained unfinished for years until my recent artistic reawakening.

In this painting, I wanted to weave together not only the history of the Romani people, as evoked in the song, but also my own personal journey. Every visual element forms a bridge between my life and the message of Khorakhané: an invitation to look at others with empathy and without judgment, to seek to understand and honor stories of suffering and resilience that deserve to be remembered.
