Description
Varenna is a picturesque village on Lake Como, in the province of Lecco. It is considered one of the most romantic villages in Italy and an ideal destination for a weekend for two or a day trip.In this painting you can see the Villa Monastero in the distance. It is an eclectic villa with a Nordic style. The building was originally a Cistercian female monastery, founded at the end of the 12th century in Varenna by some nuns evacuated from Comacina Island. When Carlo Borromeo then had the nuns transferred to another monastery of their own foundation in Lecco (1566) and Pius V suppressed the monastic order (1567)the villa was purchased by Paolo Mornico from Cortenova
