Isis is one of the principal goddesses of the religion of Ancient Egypt, whose cult spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She first appears during the Old Kingdom (c. 2686-2181 BC) as one of the main characters in the Osiris myth, in which she resurrects her murdered husband, the divine king Osiris, and bears and protects his heir, Horus.
