El Peso de lo Efímero (The Weight of the Ephemerality)

Description

The Weight of the Ephemeral represents the contradiction between matter and ether — something powerfully material and its own vanishing into the atmosphere. As if we had artificially endowed a hologram with physical substance, only for it to begin fading precisely in order to reclaim its original condition. It is a reflection on whether matter itself can become ethereal, or if that state is reserved solely for the intangible.

Here I use concrete as a paradigm of weight in architecture, and I present it deliberately more opaque than ever — more stonelike than ever, without even a single window. The large vertical slit does not act as an opening, but rather as a division of the piece into two great masses, each asserting its own weight within the work. When those masses of concrete begin to dissolve, they turn the subject into something ephemeral, as time comes into play. It is at that moment that the reflection begins.
