Fragments of Identity
by Simona Elia
Description
The painting represents the fragmentation of the "Self" that breaks, wounded, into a multiplicity of juxtaposed pieces, unable to find the intimate coherence that contemporary society tries to impose on us using a winning seductive iconography aimed at an unattainable perfection.
The portrayed subject does not know how to welcome his many selves and becomes a victim of their juxtaposition. Her mask of beauty that she would like to be incorruptible is in fact shattered, exploding into a multitude of replicas and segments, almost wounds. The skin is an empty container that is frayed into sheared flaps of paper.
